Modern libraries are a gateway to digital resources for seniors

We love sharing things that we enjoy and access to free apps through the library is one of those things.

For many people, it’s been a long time since they’ve visited the local library. So much has changed with libraries now providing more than just physical books, CDs, DVDs and magazines.

Libraries have expanded their services in the area of digital resources, with free apps, subscriptions and digital support now available.

The Digital Paradox for Seniors report highlighted that older Australians are unaware of the modern library, with only two percent of respondents indicating they use the library as a source of help. This is not surprising as many have a view of a library only for books and printed materials.

In our training sessions, our conversations around the modern library is always quite eye opening. Particularly for people who may become less mobile and active, access to these services are a great way to remain connected - and best of all without hurting the budget because they are FREE!

All you need is your library card and an email address. Library staff will help you with more information and to set up any of the services mentioned below.

The library also gives you access to technology support through Be Connected or Tech Savvy Seniors, and one-to-one help with your own device. Computers and touch screens are often available to try out the technology.

Reserving and renewing online

You can reserve books online and you can renew your books if no one else has put a reserve on it. If you ever hear about a book - just login online and see if you can reserve it. The library will let you know when it is in.

Here is a list of FREE digital subscriptions you may be able to get through your local library. Please note that not all libraries offer access to all of these apps or subscriptions mentioned below. Go to your local library and talk to them.
