SydWest Aged Care Services and YourLink are Empowering Seniors from CALD Backgrounds through Digital Skills

At YourLink, we believe that building digital skills is possible at any age and for any background.

This is why we’re thrilled to be working with SydWest Aged Care Services, a leading organisation in Western Sydney that supports the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community.

SydWest shares our passion for inclusion.

"Empowering seniors from CALD backgrounds with digital skills is about more than just technology. It's about giving them the confidence to stay connected with loved ones, access essential services, and participate in the community around them,” said SydWest Aged Care Services Manager Mereline Murimwa-Rarami.

As the world becomes more digital, the importance of skills and support needed has become even more essential. However, for seniors from CALD backgrounds, navigating the digital landscape can be even more challenging.

That's why we’re excited by the ways these digital information sessions have been making a significant impact already for seniors. In just a few short sessions we have witnessed the transformative impact digital literacy has had for the clients.

As Richard Scenna, YourLink Director, says, "It's truly heartwarming to see seniors from CALD backgrounds embrace technology and discover the wealth of opportunities it offers. They're excited by learning new things and a step closer to no longer feeling left behind."

A YourLink facilitator presents as part of the existing social support programs.

The sessions are delivered with patience, respect and allowing for flexibility to accommodate the participants' questions. This approach has been instrumental in keeping seniors engaged.

"We understand that every individual's journey is unique. By providing patient guidance in a social environment, we are ensuring that we are moving everyone along in their own digital journey,” Ms Murimwa-Rarami said.

While working with close to 20 groups of seniors from various backgrounds, we have seen common themes and concerns. These include managing safety online; confusion and fear with navigating government services, MyGov and online banking; and getting patient support that is accessible.

However, the most exciting part is that the attendees are loving the sessions and excited for the next ones. They are eager to learn anything they can to help their daily lives.
