The advances in digital care solutions create a much needed gateway to services during times like the COVID-19 pandemic. Southern Cross Care SA (SCC) recognises this to be true for many of their clients. They emphasise accessing online health and support programs requires not just access to the technology, but also an essential level of digital understanding and comfort in using smart devices.

“During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic we, like many others, introduced telehealth options for clients to remain physically active and socially engaged from the safety of their own home. While we had good uptake, it became apparent that many of those who need our health and wellness support the most had the lowest digital confidence. We also understood the problem couldn’t just be solved by giving them a device. We need to educate and support them if we want to see an increase in their digital competency” says Dr Tim Henwood, Group Manager Community Wellness & Lifestyle, SCC.

SCC partnered with YourLink, to launch their Digital Inclusion Project which will assist clients with access to Apple iPads, internet connection and support from Care Workers upskilled to help clients to use these devices in their daily lives.

“SCC realises how fast the digital space is moving. One of our goals is to make sure we continue to service our clients using the communication medium of their choice whether that is FaceTime, Zoom, email, in-person or any combination of these. This means digitally competent staff and support for clients wanting to increase their digital competency. Partnering with YourLink will help us achieve this goal.” Tim says.

Digital inclusion is so much more than just putting a device into someone’s hand. It is essential to personalise their early experience and provide training to build confidence in the use of the technology. Creating a hands-on and fun experience helps to truly inspire seniors.

Julia, a twice weekly SCC Telehealth client, has experienced an increased ability in her garden and with tasks around the house like cleaning, moving furniture and getting in or out of bed. She also reports an increase in her energy levels and better sleep. Julia can’t talk highly enough of her exercise trainer, their interactions and that they always “enjoys a laugh and a joke” during her session.

Federal Government funding has been crucial in assisting SCC to bring this program to their clients. Both staff and clients will gain important skills and knowledge in the use of digital technology to maintain independence and improve wellbeing.

The program has been carefully co-designed by YourLink and SCC using insights and input directly from clients. SCC staff have received training on how to help clients get the best use from their technology and be a valuable support as they learn how to use tools such as accessibility features, Zoom, Youtube and email to connect with friends and family and more.

"With less than 20% of seniors comfortable with video communication before COVID-19, the last twelve months has highlighted how vital these skills are to accessing services and support. We’re thrilled to be partnering with SCC to design and deliver this program to benefit South Australian seniors." says Richard Scenna, YourLink Director.
